In recent years Strala has created a unique collection of art objects. It is independent of short-lived trends. Our objects are timeless, precise and attractive works of art. This is Strala’s DNA. The first luminaire series was developed during four years of passionate research. Since 2008, we are organized as a stock company. It continuously intensifies local and international activities within art and architecture. Meanwhile, Tom is considered a pioneer of design, who questions established values and generates new ones.
For the past ten years, the Zurich designer Tom Strala has been most interested in the small and the fine. That he does not succeed – “That’s life” – does not bother him. Compared to architecture, the risk for him is within reasonable limits.
It does not matter, says Tom Strala. A small stool could combine as many ideas as a large house. At the same time, the chance to change conceptual boundaries is considerably greater for small objects than for the architecture, which he originally studied at the ETH Zurich. Finally, prototypes cannot be produced by houses.
Born in Zurich in 1974, Tom Strala graduated with distinction at ETH Zurich. Did he ever want to build? Already, but not only, architecture takes up residence. Early on, he recognized that his predilection for the design. The new forms, the material and its application possibilities, the sensible production. Since 2002 he has his own studio, since 2004 the exhibition space in the Zürcher Seefeld. Since the beginning of the 2000s, exhibitions have taken place in prestigious museums, galleries, universities and juridical mandates as well as lectures at the ETH in Zurich, or at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. Strala realized assignments for star architects such as Zaha Hadid, Sir Norman Foster, Mario Botta, David Chipperfield and Herzog and deMeuron
Tom Strala is a searcher who does not stop until he finds. He is designing a new luminaire like “Animal Farm No 1” on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his gallery, but in the Zürcher Seefeld-Quartier, but away from the celebrity strip is a gem. A small, completely unlitory gallery with furniture objects that make a sensation in well-informed circles. International collectors come here, Jean Nouvel orders here. Who is behind the label? He almost accidentally takes a conventional material, in this case a metal pipe. How does it react, which is quite possible without the effort of force, which form language corresponds to it, what becomes
From it In no case does he want to dominate the form, transform it and let it arise.

Generated. The big international performance at the Istituto Svizzero in Milano is indeed a stroke of luck, but also a logical step in the life of Tom Strala. Is it art or design, if one produces objects as unicates or at least in small series? Where is the interface?
His furniture is function – design and poetry – art at the same time. “People have to dream again, we need passion, longing. No new update for our operating system. We need
Intensity and this is not in the compromise.
This is man’s DNA.
Furniture design Strala
Strala’s furniture design is always pragmatic and poetic at the same time. It combines all-natural elastic wickerwork with strong steel to a new whole. He likes objects like the Seefeld series, which are at the same time precise in the forming language and casual in use. Furniture that conveys a feeling of life like in a holiday home that is unpretentious and radiates warmth. He is the tinkerer who develops and improves and does not need the influences of the hotspots of the world. He still wants constant
Make everything better, its objects even more independent. To manifest against the sterile and strained design, which in its vanity lack the lifelong desire for life
The What is he working on at the moment? At his taxation. What would he never want to do? His tax declaration. For the new Hotel und Kongresshaus Wallberg in Volketswil, he is developing a special light for the lobby. He will soon be invited to the Belgrade Design Week, with an exhibition and a lecture.

Starla ist lokal In Switzerland and acts internationally. His ten-year career has carried him far: cooperation with offices of Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield or Norman Foster can be reported. That the cooperation did not take place with the owners, but nevertheless with Masterminds, he frankly admits in the refreshing interview with the icon magazine. But that does not matter, it’s about working with people with “brilliant minds”. How true! Its design furniture is appreciated internationally and auctioned at the best price.
Strala lamps have international customers. My passion for awakened thoughts is the driving force. It is the joy of research. The fascination for the essence of matter is the driving force. This creates our objects and furniture. The mind is that of a seeker. One of the constantly challenging. Getting closer to the substance is the goal. To understand what is hidden behind it. He pursues the scent of an intriguing idea. However, not to kill them. But to breathe life. We produce in Zurich, Switzerland. We are interested in the fact that different worlds collide. This creates the friction forces that we materialize through our furniture. Because precisely there, the thought is no longer black or white. It is completely free of values. For a moment instant immediacy develops. This contains neither knowledge nor meaning. And is therefore more sensual than anything in the world.
